Phillip Garrido, 58, and his wife Nancy Garrido, 55, have been
charged with 29 felonies in connection with the alleged kidnapping, rape and
false imprisonment of Dugard, who was 11 years old when she was snatched from
in front of her South Lake Tahoe home on the morning of June 10, 1991.
Dugard allegedly lived in a complex of hidden sheds and tents in
the backyard of the Garridos’ home at 1554 Walnut Ave. in a semi-rural,
unincorporated neighborhood just outside of Antioch.
While living there, Dugard gave birth to two children allegedly
fathered by Phillip Garrido. The children, both girls, are now 11 and 15
years old.
Phillip and Nancy Garrido pleaded not guilty to the charges during
an arraignment in El Dorado County Superior Court in Placerville on Friday,
according to the district attorney’s office.
Meanwhile, local law enforcement agencies began searching the
Garridos’ property Friday for evidence that could link Phillip Garrido to a
series of unsolved murders of prostitutes in Pittsburg and Bay Point the
1990s, Contra Costa County sheriff’s Capt. Daniel Terry said.

Cadaver dogs search yard of Garrido’s neighbor
Law enforcement from two counties and two city police departments used cadaver dogs to search a yard neighboring the couple charged with kidnapping and raping Jaycee Lee Dugard, who was held captive 18 years in Antioch, Calif., the Associated Press reports. (Here’s raw video of the search.)
Unlike search and rescue dogs used to find living people, cadaver dogs are specially trained to follow the scent of decomposing human remains.
Police in nearby Pittsburg said they’re investigating whether Phillip Garrido may be linked to unsolved murders of prostitutes in the ’90s. Antioch police are also looking into unsolved cases but declined further details.
Some law enforcement agencies have their own cadaver dogs, while others rely on trained volunteer teams. There’s no breed requirement, but search and rescue dogs are typically the larger working and sporting varieties: German Shepherds, Labradors, Dobermans, Rottweilers, Golden Retrievers and Giant Schnauzers, according to the National Association for Search and Rescue.

About 20 officers used cadaver dogs, metal detectors and shovels to search the properties in Antioch, northern California.
Neighbours said Garrido lived next door as a caretaker until about 2006. The home also has several sheds and outbuildings.
When current occupant Damon Robinson moved in, he was shocked to find the doors fitted with locks designed to keep people inside rather than out.
“In one of the sheds there was a music player, a couch, a mattress and a VCR. He really wanted the VCR back when I found it,” he said.

Authorities say Dugard and the girls had only “rudimentary” bath facilities. The girls never saw a doctor and never went to school, they said. Dugard, who customers say helped run the family business as a talented graphic designer and printer, may never have left the junk-riddled property since her abduction at age 11 from a South Lake Tahoe street.
The seven photos, all taken from the hidden yard, may not reflect the state of the yard when authorities first arrived with a search warrant last
week, after the couple’s arrest Wednesday. Deepal Karunaratne, a Sri Lankan-born estate agent who employed Garrido to print his flyers and business cards, is reported to have met Ms Dugard and exchanged regular phone calls and emails with her.
And Ben Daughdrill, who used Garrido’s Print for Less business for six years, described today how Jaycee came across “as very polite, very good natured”.
He told reporters: “There was never any reason to think anything different — [she was] just like another secretary at another office.”
Another customer, Cheyvonne Molina, says that Jaycee’s two girls attended a Sweet 16 birthday party for her own daughter. She said: “They were just your regular 15-year-old, your average 11-year-old.”
Garrido and his wife have denied 29 charges, including rape and kidnap.
US police are also investigating whether Garrido can be linked to the murders of several prostitutes in the 1990s.

Meanwhile murder squad detectives continue to search the Garridos squalid home amid growing fears that they could have been responsible for a string of unsolved murders and abductions in the region.
Dogs trained to detect the scent of corpses were scouring the sprawling land behind the house and the property next door where Garrido had worked as a caretaker. Around 20 officers using rakes, shovels and chainsaws also combed the area.
Jimmy Lee, spokesman for the Contra Costa county sheriffs department, said: There is a larger story to it that we cant go into right now.
Police in nearby Pittsburg, where Garrido used to work, are also investigating possible links to a string of murders between November 1998 and January 1999.
A 15-year-old schoolgirl and three prostitutes were abducted and murdered in quick succession and their bodies dumped on industrial wasteland close to Antioch.

A team of 40 detectives is combing through the tents and sheds on Garrido’s property where Ms Dugard, who is now 29, is believed to have been hidden away with her two daughters. Sniffer dogs were also brought in to help search for human remains. The property next door was sealed off and searched at the weekend after it emerged that Garrido acted as caretaker there during the early 1990s, building another series of sheds in its sprawling garden. The properties are in a blue-collar neighbourhood on a semi-rural patch of land near the Sacramento River.
Police have also declared Garrido a “person of interest” in the murders of up to 10 prostitutes who were strangled, stabbed and dumped in ditches near Antioch in the late 1990s. A spokesman said Garrido “had access” to the various crime scenes, which were all on industrial parks, but did not elaborate further. So far the evidence linking Garrido to other cases is circumstantial at best. But he has a history of sexual violence.
