Redwood Avenue and Toyon Drive, Nov. 3 A female driver who struck a parked vehicle and tried to run off was caught and arrested for driving under the influence.
3200 block of El Camino Real, last Wednesday A woman accused of prostitution was arrested.
4900 block of Old Ironsides Drive, Thursday A male seen loading his vehicle with copper was contacted and arrested for stealing the copper from a building nearby.
De Soto and La Salle avenues, Thursday A driver and passenger were arrested after police determined both had outstanding warrants and found a replica gun and dagger in their vehicle.

Bilingual police officers could begin canvassing neighborhoods with gang problems, talking to residents about how to address the crimes and use the services available to them to keep their homes safe.
The city could pay $50,000 for programs to help divert teens from crime. Police will kick in another $30,000 for drug and gang prevention at the Santa Cruz Teen Center, paid for through confiscated drug money and other similarly obtained dollars marked for that purpose.
New streetlights could illuminate Pacific Avenue in the next few months, as an $80,000 project scheduled for 2010-11 is fast-tracked after the recent problems.
New rules could crack down on owners of “problem properties” that become havens for gangs, drug users, prostitutes and others seeking a place for illegal behavior. The cuncil could direct staff to research and draft the rules, which would be considered at a future meeting.

Of course, it’s silly for the university to do this because it is far nobler to do it on the field where the results cannot be disputed, and yet in the world of intercollegiate whoring, it is but a single chip in a supercomputer. It is also a bad use of money because the BCS system comes closer to mirroring the hive mind of the Borg, the Star Trek supervillain, than anything this side of … well, the rest of the NCAA.
But there are no points to be deducted here for cheapening a process that already makes a house of prostitution look like the Kennedy Center. Boise State is merely trying to break into a closed shop by setting one up across the street, hoping that foot traffic can do what mere performance cannot.

The known victims in the series of attacks, which began April 9 and ended when he was arrested Oct. 26 by an Emeryville police officer who saw him assaulting a victim in a truck, range in age from 15 to 25. Five of the women are prostitutes and the other is a narcotics dealer, authorities said.

Now contrast this with the results of the more enlightened policy on tobacco. While the dangers of smoking have been acknowledged for over 30 years, governments have not sought to deal with the vice through bans. Instead, they have concentrated their efforts on public education with the result that smoking rates in the West are falling. Because the industry is legal, we can regulate the contents of cigarettes, whom they are advertised and sold to, and where one may or may not light up. Most importantly, there is no violence associated with the production and sale of cigarettes.
If these other trades were legal, then they too could be regulated and taxed. Children and minors would be protected by legislation requiring a minimum age; prostitutes’ earnings would also be protected from the predation of pimps. Importantly, counselling and help could be offered to prostitutes wishing to leave the profession, and to drug addicts willing to change. As it is now, the law treats them as criminals. Such aid could be easily funded by the taxes levied on the legal enterprises engaging in these ventures.

Music industry watchers have been keeping an eye on BlueBeat in recent months, and many speculate EMI will be just the first of the major labels to file copyright infringement actions against the company. This summer, BlueBeat removed all links to Apple’s iTunes from its service, with the CEO of parent company Media Rights Technologies Hank Risan claiming to be “shocked” that Apple did not have compulsory licenses to manufacture or distribute content via the Internet. “Until Apple is fully compliant with government regulations, iTunes will not be permitted on our sites,” Risan wrote.
BlueBeat has not commented in the EMI lawsuit.
Separately, rock-pop band No Doubt has filed suit against Activision-Blizzard over the use of their likenesses in the just-released
video game. According to the complained, Activision does have a contract to put No Doubt into the game, but not to enable gamers to use No Doubt avatars to perform songs by other artists. An example given in the complaint says players can use No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani’s avatar to perform the Rolling Stones song “Honky Tonk Women,” amounting to “an unauthorized performance by the Gwen Stefani avatar in a male voice boasting about having sex with prostitutes.”
