Cline said that after making those statements publicly he took some teasing from other council members Tuesday while leading his first meeting, which took 4½ hours to address six regular business items on the agenda.
Shortening the meetings “may take a little time,” he said with a laugh. “It’s a pattern people have in the meetings. I would like us to minimize our Q-and-A sessions with staff and be more crisp in presenting our positions.”

At 4 p.m. a demonstration was held in front of the regional governor’s office on South Broad Street. Protesters held “Honk for Mumia” signs and blew whistles on the state’s protracted campaign to deny justice to an innocent man. The demonstration and whistle blowing then moved to District Attorney Lynne Abraham’s office near the Philadelphia City Hall.
Later in the evening, an organizing meeting scheduled at the American Friends Center was expanded to include a special tribute to Veronica Jones, who died on Dec. 8.
On Dec. 15, 1981, Jones, a sex worker who was in the area where Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner was shot in the early morning hours of Dec. 9, 1981, told police she had seen two men running away from the crime scene before police arrived. Later, facing charges that could have meant 10 years in prison and the loss of her children, Jones was pressured into recanting her eyewitness account, even denying making the original statement, after police visited her in jail.

While Pinheiro said the law firm is not perfect, he felt it has served the city well in the past.
“I want the City of Gilroy to be represented as best as possible,” Pinheiro said. “But I also don’t want to start throwing rocks without having all the facts and without being at the dais and having a conversation with fellow members of the council.”
On the other hand, Gartman said he was happy for Woodward’s straightforward comments. He recommended the council reconvene to discuss creating an ordinance rather than continuing a lengthy court battle.
“It’s been said, ‘It’s better to litigate than to mitigate,’” he said.
Bracco had no comment on Woodward’s e-mail to council members. However, he expressed concern that other businesses such as strip clubs might now decide to open up without city permission based on Murphy’s decisions.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The local branch of an international professional women’s service organization is involved in efforts to raise awareness to stop sexual trafficking of women and girls.
“Human trafficking occurs everywhere in the world, even in our own backyards,” said Jovanka Harrison, president of Soroptimist International of Saratoga County. “We want the public to become aware of its depth, and to be able to recognize a woman or girl — perhaps a neighbor — who may need help getting out of a dire situation.”
Sexual trafficking is the movement of people for the purposes of prostitution or other forms of commercial sexual exploitation. In addition to publicizing the existence of forced prostitution and other forms of commercial sexual exploitation in the United States and abroad, the Saratoga club is financially supporting Soroptimist’s efforts on an international level.
