CORPUS CHRISTI A new shopping center is going up at Alameda Drive and Airline Road near South Shore Estates, with completion expected by March.
Named South Shore Plaza, the 18,000-square-foot project sits on a portion of the former Cullen Mall site. Cullen Mall, a strip center opened in 1963, was razed in 1999.
Zeva Developers Inc. recently purchased the property from First National Bank, after the company decided not to place a new bank at the site, according to Zeva staff.
Several businesses have signed on to set up shop.
“We’ve got four tenants already that have shown interest and signed a letter of intent to move in,” said Moe Motaghi of Zeva developers. “We should be ready to go this spring.”
The four new stores include a hair salon, a Christian book store, a barber shop and a massage parlor, Motaghi said.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The local branch of an international professional women’s service organization is involved in efforts to raise awareness to stop sexual trafficking of women and girls.
“Human trafficking occurs everywhere in the world, even in our own backyards,” said Jovanka Harrison, president of Soroptimist International of Saratoga County. “We want the public to become aware of its depth, and to be able to recognize a woman or girl — perhaps a neighbor — who may need help getting out of a dire situation.”
Sexual trafficking is the movement of people for the purposes of prostitution or other forms of commercial sexual exploitation. In addition to publicizing the existence of forced prostitution and other forms of commercial sexual exploitation in the U.S. and abroad, the Saratoga club is financially supporting Soroptimist’s efforts on an international level.

Ms. Carter stated that sex and prostitution are separated by differences in process and interpersonal dynamic, in the same way that sex and rape are differentiated.  Dr. Farley focused on the prostituted woman’s emotional presence, and pointed out that many prostituted women dissociate emotionally during their acts, either through emotional means or through substance abuse.

The findings of the modes of transmission study conducted last year indicates that the incidence of HIV is rising especially among married couples aged 30-40.
The study indicates that 44% of new infections were among persons involved in multiple sexual partnerships (that is, those reporting two or more partners), including their regular partners, and about 11% were related to sex work.
Multiple partnerships, which is regarded as a “common phenomenon” in Uganda, is one of the reasons HIV prevalence is now highest in the older, married populations, a group that is currently not the target of prevention programmes.

This is regarded as a common practice in Africa where a man can have as many women, besides his marital wife.

Dr Kumar noted that 14 people on Cayman have been recorded with AIDS, which develops in HIV-positive individuals, when symptoms of the disease are manifested in the host.
According to the 2009 AIDS epidemic update in 2008, an estimated 240, 000 people were living with HIV in the Caribbean region, while an estimated 20, 000 people were newly infected and some 12,000 died of AIDS-related illnesses.
The report also suggests that the Caribbean has been more heavily affected by HIV than any region outside sub- Saharan Africa and has the second highest level of adult HIV prevalence.
Heterosexual transmission, often tied to sex work, is the main driver of HIV transmission in the region, the report noted, citing high HIV infection rates among sex workers — 27% in Guyana and 9% in Jamaica in 2005.
