San Jose Escorts: Neighbors, community raise safety concerns in the wake of Monday’s brutal homicide

… It’s really shaken me, and we do walk around the neighborhood a lot,” said Coonerty. “It’s a nice group of people who live around here, and that’s what makes it particularly scary.”
The former mayor said the incident has made him and his wife talk about having her walk less by herself, a sentiment shared by neighbors.
“This is so random and crazy,” he said. “That is what is unnerving about it, and it makes me feel nervous, angry and threatened.”
It’s the random nature of the crime that makes JD Sotelo, a founder of the Lower Ocean Neighbors group, not convinced that the problem is the neighborhood itself. He doesn’t believe the crime has anything to do with the neighborhood, which has long battled drug dealing, prostitution and other crime. “The random insanity” of the act signals to Sotelo that it could have occurred anywhere to anyone.

San Jose Escorts: Union City exempts gas stations from tobacco ordinance

… Right now, 20 percent of all the deaths in Union City are caused by tobacco use,” Serena Chen, of the American Lung Association in California, told council members before they voted Tuesday night.
“Having one more outlet to sell tobacco … means more places where people can buy tobacco. It means more death.”
Council members acknowledged opponents concerns, but said they have to balance them with the danger of eliminating a local business on a street corner that used to be blighted by crime and graffiti.
“I work in that area, I have relatives in that area, I have friends in that area,” Councilman Jim Navarro said. “When that station was closed, there were a lot of things going on in that area: A lot of prostitution, a lot of gang activity, a lot of graffiti, and I’m not going to stand for that.”

PLEASURE POINT – Crews will start paving the dirt road that winds along the bluffs at Soquel Point on Thursday, then begin installing landscaping, in one of the final phases of the East Cliff Drive improvement project.
But most know the area as, “Pleasure Point,” a nickname possibly derived from a reputed house of prostitution that once stood in the area now known as a surfing mecca.
“No one had ever heard of ‘Pleasure Point’ until (the land) was subdivided in 1934,” local historian Norman Poitevin told a group of residents as they stood outside the Point Market, at the intersection of East Cliff Drive and 32nd Avenue.
They gathered there Tuesday for the first Summer Walk series of the season, a tradition started in 2007 by members of the Live Oak Neighbors group to share information they’ve gleaned through years of historical research.

In delivering his plea, Butler confessed that he and Wielsch sold marijuana, methamphetamine and steroids worth tens of thousands of dollars that Wielsch stole out of police evidence lockers from November 2010 until their arrests in February 2011, capping an investigation by the state Department of Justice, which administered the Central Contra Costa Narcotics Enforcement Team that Wielsch led.

Butler confirmed long-held rumors when he said he and Wielsch ran a brothel out of a Pleasant Hill massage parlor from November 2009 through April 2010, collecting $10,000 in rent and protection money, as Wielsch’s position of authority shielded them from scrutiny.
