PLEASURE POINT – Crews will start paving the dirt road that winds along the bluffs at Soquel Point on Thursday, then begin installing landscaping, in one of the final phases of the East Cliff Drive improvement project.
But most know the area as, “Pleasure Point,” a nickname possibly derived from a reputed house of prostitution that once stood in the area now known as a surfing mecca.
“No one had ever heard of ‘Pleasure Point’ until (the land) was subdivided in 1934,” local historian Norman Poitevin told a group of residents as they stood outside the Point Market, at the intersection of East Cliff Drive and 32nd Avenue.
They gathered there Tuesday for the first Summer Walk series of the season, a tradition started in 2007 by members of the Live Oak Neighbors group to share information they’ve gleaned through years of historical research.

Police responded to a prostitution report at the La Quinta Inn, 46200 Landing Parkway, Monday at 3:12 p.m.
The hotel clerk told police they thought one of their guests was soliciting in one of the rooms there, police said.
Officers arrived at the suspect’s room and knocked on the door. They were greeted by the suspect, identified as 48-year-old Woodland resident Teresa Telavera.
A suspected client, 38-year-old David Isla of San Jose, was in the room with her, police said.
Both were taken to Fremont City Jail on charges of engaging in prostitution, police said.

Police had received several reports that the Celandine Day Spa in San Mateo was offering prostitution.

Shui “Cece” Chen, 45, of Hayward, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of prostitution.
Police searched a massage business in San Mateo this week, arrested one employee on suspicion of prostitution, and cited the owner for several misdemeanor violations related to the business, police said.
Police had received several reports that the Celandine Day Spa at 155 E. Fifth Ave. was offering prostitution in addition to its regular massage business, and police gathered evidence supporting those reports, police said.
On Wednesday afternoon, police served a search warrant there, which led to one arrest and the citations for the business’s owner, Daly City resident Michelle Yang, 41.
Shui “Cece” Chen, 45, of Hayward, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of prostitution and was booked into San Mateo County Jail.
