San Jose Massage Parlors: Los Gatos Massage Parlor Gets Vice Visit

Los Gatos Massage Parlor Gets Vice Visit
Updated 2:31 PM PDT, Mon, Aug 30, 2010
Who knew the town of Los Gatos had a vice squad?  We didn’t.  But we found out one exists today when we read the front page of the Mercury News.
It ran a story about a vice sting operation of a Los Gatos massage parlor that was suspected of being a front for prostitution because it listed an ad on Craigslist that mentioned “beautiful Asian girls.”
Earlier this year, an undercover vice officer went to check it out. When he asked for a “happy ending” the person doing the massage simply refused.
While there, the cop noted some minor code violations at “Relaxing Massage” on North Santa Cruz Avenue.
Those lead to the arrest of the owner, a yanking of  their permit and the potential closure of the family-run business.

San Jose Massage Parlors: Man involved in armed robberies sentenced to prison

OAKLAND, CA — A member of an Oakland-based armed robbery crew has been sentenced in federal court in Oakland to 13 years and three months in prison.
San Kwen Saephan, 29, was given the federal prison term by U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken on Wednesday.
Prosecutors said Saephen was part of a small group that committed three armed robberies at a massage parlor in San Rafael, a massage parlor in El Cerrito and a karaoke bar in Hayward over a nine-day period between Dec. 30, 2007, and Jan. 8, 2008.
Two other members of the group brandished guns and Saephan held a fake gun while threatening victims at the three businesses, according to prosecutors. Some of the victims were tied up and one woman’s collarbone was broken when Saephan and another man ripped her purse off her shoulder, prosecutors said.

San Jose Massage Parlors: North county Democratic headquarters to open

The yellow building, located at the end of a strip mall that houses a Hawaiian barbecue restaurant and a kung-fu dojo, has a long history of housing Democratic efforts. Assembly candidate Josh Becker used the 2,000 square feet for his 2010 primary campaign. Sen. John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign efforts were hosted there. The building also headquartered the “Silicon Valley for Obama” group in 2008.
Obama volunteer Lisa Altieri worked in the office on Election Day 2008.
“We were phone banking to every state in the West up till 7 p.m.,” she said.
The office, parking lot and Happy Donuts next door were completely packed, Altieri said. “It was amazing, watching the states turn blue on the television screen.”
In the 1970s, before the Democrats got a hold of the space, 3898 El Camino Real was home to an X-rated theater called the Copenhagen, according to local historian Matt Bowling’s website, The Palo Alto History Project. The area was then known for massage parlors and prostitution, but a crackdown in 1976 led to more law-abiding activity in the area.

San Jose Massage Parlors: Robbery leader sentenced to 22 years

The leader of a gang of robbers that targeted Bay Area small businesses and customers during a monthlong spree was sentenced today to more than 22 years in federal prison.
Kao Saeturn, 29, of Richmond, described by federal prosecutors as “an ultra-violent leader of an armed robbery crew and a lifelong criminal,” was ordered by U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken in Oakland to spend 272 months behind bars for masterminding a string of robberies to help supply a methamphetamine habit.
During the robberies from December 2007 and January 2008, Saeturn and his crew of robbers held up massage parlors in San Rafael and El Cerrito, a karaoke bar in Hayward and tried to carjack a retired female San Francisco sheriff’s deputy. “Saeturn brandished a gun, threatened the lives of his victims and terrorized innocent people,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Garth Hire wrote in court papers in which he sought a sentence of more than 28 years.

San Jose Massage Parlors: Massage Parlors Under the Scope in Belmont

Massage Parlors Under the Scope in Belmont
Updated 2:00 PM PDT, Thu, Jul 29, 2010
Belmont officials have halted issuing any new massage therapist permits amid concerns that some businesses could be covers for sex workers.
The city council imposed the 45-day moratorium Tuesday after learning that 80 percent of Belmont’s massage therapists were certified by schools deemed illegitimate by a state watchdog group. The California Massage Therapy Council says those schools may allow sex workers to set up businesses by selling diplomas.
Now, 37 people who who said they went to those suspect schools could have their licenses revoked or mdified by the city, The San Mateo Daily Journal reported.
State-certified therapists still can set up shop in Belmont without the city permit, but others won’t be able to do so during the moratorium. Officials say existing therapists seeking to renew their permits also will face more scrutiny.

San Jose Massage Parlors: In Belmont, 80 percent of massage therapists suspected of prostitution

Halleran said investigations of massage parlors are labor intensive and, in recent years, police have suspended operations of a few for code violations but made no arrests.
The City Council on Tuesday will consider adopting an urgency ordinance to place a moratorium on any new massage practitioners for the following 45 days. The council would vote on Aug. 10 extend the ban through July 2011.
“I guess I was surprised that it was that blatant,” said City Councilman Dave Warden.

It is unclear whether the problem is especially rampant in Belmont, where there are 10 massage parlors, or if the city is merely alone in researching its massage therapists. No other cities in San Mateo County have approved similar moratoriums in recent weeks.
In San Mateo and Burlingame, at least, no inventories of those cities’ massage parlors have been conducted, officials said.

PAHRUMP, Nev. — It’s usually past midnight when Ron Wayne, co-founder of Apple — colossus of the tech world, and Silicon Valley’s most adored franchise — leaves his home here and heads into town. Averting his eyes from a boneyard of abandoned mobile homes, he drives past Terrible’s Lakeside Casino & RV Park, then makes a left at the massage parlor built in the shape of a castle.
When he arrives at that night’s casino of choice, Mr. Wayne makes a beeline for the penny slot machines. If it’s the middle of the month, and he has just cashed his Social Security check, he will keep battling the one-armed bandits until 2 a.m. Mr. Wayne is waiting to hit the jackpot, and he is long overdue.
