In the state of Morelos, where she grew up, Day of the Dead is an annual fiesta during which departed loved ones are celebrated and honoured publically and privately.
In the homes, no expense is spared on altars, which are “unbelievably ornate with candles, flowers, pictures, paintings and the figurines.” (MacKay doesn’t adorn her altar with her collection.)
The most famous collectible is probably La Catrina, says MacKay. Also referred to as la Flaca, la Huesuda, la Pelona — Fancy Lady, Skinny, Bony, Baldy — she is a permanent fixture in Mexican society, and increasingly in North America. Yet she is far from being some trendy fashion model; rather, she is La Muerte: Death.
The famed mythical figure — first created by renowned artist José Guadalupe Posada — has been formed out of wood or clay, and depicted as a doctor, judge, teacher, tennis player, prostitute. In fact, every conceivable profession and pastime can be caricatured.
