Watsonville card room loses liquor license after death: Future of Ceasar’s Club uncertain

WATSONVILLE – Two decades ago, bars lined lower Main Street, making for a lively if rowdy downtown nightlife.
But bars like La Frontera, Monterey Club, La Poblanita and Pasa Tiempo Club – where police routinely responded to calls of brawls, prostitution, drug sales and public drunkenness – disappeared amid city redevelopment.
Today only Ceasar’s Club, a bar and card room on the 100 block, remains. But no one’s bellying up to the long wooden bar there for a beer anymore, and Ceasar’s, one of only two card rooms in Santa Cruz County, could soon be a memory as well.
Ceasar’s lost its state license to sell beer and wine in the wake of an investigation into the 2009 death of a patron. Another state agency is evaluating its gambling license, and Tuesday, the Planning Commission will consider pulling the business’ municipal permit to sell alcohol – a housekeeping detail that will almost certainly be approved.
